Connecting without remote?

Why did Apple ruin the Apple TV (3rd Generation)? I can’t enter the required passcode to use the remote in Control Center without a physical remote control. Why?? Now I have to throw the equipment away and get a Roku. Why did Apple make this terrible change/mistake?

Why did Apple make this change?
