Ambient Light Sensor in Dark Room

Coming from AW4 to AW7 I don’t think I like this ambient light sensor feature. When I’m in a dark room, the brightness is so dim it looks like it’s the same setting as always on even though I have the max brightness setting. I have trouble reading the watch with this setting. I have no problem when I’m in a bright room. Is Apple going to make this feature optional like disabling auto-brightness somehow? I feel like this is a deal-breaker for me and may go back to my AW4.😩

Here is one suggestion, which I've read works. If the watch doesn't brighten more in a low light setting, put your hand over the watch face for a few seconds, then uncover and the ambient light setting should recalibrate to the brightness of the room.
