Casio Privia PX-160 suddenly not being recognized--can't record Midi

If anyone could help me..I am so frustrated as I've spent my entire evening trying to fix this.

Had an idea for a song, so I booted up Logic Pro X as normal and plugged in my Privia to record the midi. I have never had to do anything special to connect my privia, its always just worked fine.

At first, I connected my privia, and created a new project. Logic would ONLY let me select "external midi" as an option for tracks, but I wanted to record in a software instrument track. At this point I unplugged it and opened a new project again, and created a software instrument track. It wouldn't recognize any midi. I tested out a new USB cable, still not working. I swapped USB-C to USB 3 adapters. Still didn't work. Tried restarting logic multiple times, no luck.

SO. Then I try to restart the whole computer... the computer won't restart. So I have to manually restart the computer. Once I restart, still no luck in getting the midi to work. My roommate suggested I uninstall and reinstall Logic. Great idea! I thought...thinking I probably messed with the settings in Logic.

So I uninstall and go to reinstall and it tells me I'm running an old version of OS and need to update (sigh). I try to update and it FAILS. After a few failed attempts I contact Apple Support and get it all updated, I now have Big Sur and everything on the mac is all rounded a colorful, whoop de doo.

I reinstall Logic and plug in to play as usual. Still NOTHING. After some Googling, I tested it out in Audio Midi Setup, the test was failing, as in it was not recognizing any midi data from the Keyboard, although the keyboard was showing up in midi setup. I decided to try deleting it and adding the device again.

So I delete the advice from my "midi setup" in the Midi Setup app, and then plug it back in and refresh, and it won't come back. Tried restarting and everything, still won't come back.

Further Googling led me to install some drivers to make my privia work. They did absolutely nothing... further Googling taught me that this model of the privia doesn't need drivers and should just be plug and play...

I am so incredibly frustrated. It used to be so simple, and I refuse to buy a tiny, awkward midi controller, or an expensive midi interface when I have this beautiful piece of technology that can do it all beautifully with a simple USB. Any help you have to offer is so so so appreciated!

Please know I've tried all the basic things (swapping for a new cable, restarting and resetting everything, etc., even ran first aid on the hard drive...) thank you!!!

Hi,

You are trying all the right things to solve this issue. There have been lots of issues starting with Catalina in regards to MIDI and legacy products. There is a great ( free) app called MIDIView that is available for free on the App Store. It will show what data is being received from the device.

What version of OSX did you update to BS from? If pre Catalina you are most likely hitting a device support issue.

How are you connecting the Casio? USB Direct or through a 5pin DIN Adapter?

Also legacy control surfaces can also be a problem. In the Apple MIDI/ Audio Setup application note and delete any unused MIDI devices or Audio Interfaces. Next clean the system of any drivers related to to the deleted devices. If you have not customized any controllers you can also delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file located with the same place as the com.apple.logic10.plist file ( ~/Library/Preferences ). It is for control surface settings.

Try this

Disconnect the Casio

Launch Logic

In Logic go into Logic Pro : Control Surfaces : Control Surface Setup.

Delete any devices.

Next

In the Apple MIDI Setup Delete any MIDI Devices you are not using and the Casio

You said you installed some drivers? You need to make sure any drivers you have are fully compatible with Big Sur and remove any that are not.

Restart

Launch the Apple MIDI Setup

Connect the Casio

Test inApple MIDI Setup - Working?

Test using MIDIView... working?

Any other sound app you can test with?

Try a launch Logic, no project

Logic Pro : Control Surfaces : Control Surface Setup. Is the Casio there?? If not try New - Scan All Models

I'll watch for a reply.

Hi! Thank you so much for your reply. I am connecting via USB. I was running Catalina prior to updating. The Casio was working as a midi controller last time I plugged in, a few days ago or so. Then yesterday I plugged in, still running Catalina, and it stopped being recognized.

I updated in an attempt to fix the problem. I’ve tried most of what you’ve said so far, it doesn’t show up when I scan all. I opened an old project where I had used the keyboard, it’s named “CASIO USB MIDI” but that doesn’t show up in the options. I installed some drivers yesterday, yes, but I’m unsure where to look to uninstall them!

I also tried finding the files you suggested I delete and I can’t find those either. I’m going to bring the macbook to my boyfriends tonight to test it with some of his midi devices also! Thanks again for your help!!
