As per the subject line, my handset has stopped certain characters appearing when depressed in texts, emails, messages etc. Happens with and without screen protection, following reset and the device is at the latest version. Please help! Under warranty until next year.

Glad you mentioned the warranty. The worst thing that may have happened to your iPhone is a failing display module. But, why mess around troubleshooting this when you have an active warranty? You appear to have already tried the basic troubleshooting steps that you can take.
My recommendation is that you take advantage of that warranty and have your iPhone examined at the Apple Store or at an Authorized Service Center for diagnosis and a resolution.

It seems to be just a certain area of the screen and denies characters such as y, 6, ), >, %^ etc…pretty much mid centre of keyboard on all text apps and products.
