Return key on an Apple wireless keyboard has stopped working after several yrs.

Letter keys work. I've rebooted my Mac. I've removed and re-inserted the keyboard batteries (which show 97% remaining). Any ideas/suggestions? I have gone to the same support link that was posted on other threads but it is of no use, isn't even same situation. The keyboard connects as I am typing this on the same keyboard. The return key does not function though. This is the link I've been to but no assistance: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204621#connectissue

Your keyboard is several years old. Depending on how much and heavily you use it, you may simply have worn out or broken that key. Maybe it's just time for a new keyboard.

Using the Keyboard Viewer in the menu bar – go to System Preferences > Keyboard to activate it – does the viewer register the keystroke when you press it?

If rebooting your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in Safe mode (hold the shift key down at startup). It can take much longer to safe boot (10 min) so be patient.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Safe mode forces the OS to clear certain caches and logs and do other miscellaneous housekeeping. It's non-destructive to user data so is safe to do. Very often certain weird software behavior is corrected by simply logging in this way as a troubleshooting method. When you're in safe boot, the machine will not be at its best performance, especially with graphics, but that's expected.

Does the problem persist while in Safe mode?

Exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally and re-evaluate the issue again.

So follow up.....I ended up rolling my finger around on the return key, pushing it in all directions, the whole key at the same time with 2 fingers, and it worked! And has worked a few times since then so fingers crossed it has corrected, for the time being at least. Perhaps a bad connector sensor or a small piece of debris under the key (if that's possible on these keyboards?)? Thank you for your time.

Good to know you confirmed the safe boot.

Too bad it had no effect on the problem, unfortunately. It does sound to me like that key has failed.

But, on the bright side, this is a perfect excuse to buy an inexpensive USB keyboard that can hold you over until you get that new 32" M1 Pro Max iMac. 😃 And then you can toss it in a drawer to keep at hand for future troubleshooting. 👍🏽

I was able to confirm I was in Safe mode. Glitchy screens, webpages wouldn't load most of the content, part of the content would flash on and off. Was using Chrome. I tried to use the return key to post on social media, no go. I then opened Pages, new document and tried to return after typing some letters. No go. Perhaps the key itself is shot. I guess I will take the keyboard into my local repair/retailer and they should be able to see if it works on one of theres. The new chip in the Mac 27" can't come out soon enough so we can replace this old beast....

Thank you for your reply. I too thought perhaps it is the keyboard that is simply old with a worn out key. I did go to the keyboard viewer and the return key was not marked on the keyboard in the box. The letters were. When I hit the return key the corresponding key (not labelled return), did not light up. I then tried hitting a letter and that also did not light up. Does that mean anything? Again, all letters work, I'm typing this with the keyboard. I will next try safe mode. Not sure if I am supposed to hold the shift key for the entire up to 10 minutes while it reboots? Will google and see what it says.
