Old emails keep downloading after deletion?

Hi there,


I have an iPhone 12 & whenever I open my emails I notice that old emails that I’ve deleted (sometimes multiple times) keep returning to my “inbox” or “unread”. I’ll even sometimes delete them out of the “trash” box too, but they’ll still return.


I use the iPhone “mail” app for all my emails. I have multiple email accounts synced to “mail”.

All my settings in mail are set to “delete from server” once retrieved. I retrieve my mail “manually” multiple times a day. When I log in to my emails (directly online through my ISP) instead of the “mail” app, the emails are not there.


I’ve tried restarting my phone & deleting all mail accounts & reinstating each one, but it still happens.


I never had any mail problems with my other iPhone. I updated to the newer iPhone 12 about 6 months ago.


Can you please offer any advice?

We understand that you’re experiencing an issue on your iPhone using the Mail app where emails that you’ve previously deleted are reappearing in your Inbox. If we understand correctly, when you check your email directly through your provider’s website, the emails are showing that they’ve been deleted there, but your iPhone is still attempting to load them. If we’re on the same page, we commend you for what looks to be some amazing troubleshooting. 


We caution you with removing accounts that are set to “delete from server” upon retrieval. If you’re working with a POP account, you may inadvertently remove emails that you wish to keep and not be able to retrieve them.


If you haven’t already, we encourage you to update to the latest version of the iOS software. If the issue is with the Mail app on your iPhone, you’ll receive any updates or fixes for the Mail app with an iOS update.

Then check to make sure you’re choosing the best information for your accounts. You might start with just one account and confirm that you’re using the correct server name, security protocol, and ports for your incoming mail. You may need to contact your email service provider for the best information and setup.
