Will Apple XDR Display chain the ethernet

Hi,

I’m waiting for my new MBP 16 to arrive, and was wondering the following:

If I would also buy an XDR Display, and connect my ethernet cable at home to it through a Ethernet to USB-C adapter.. if I then in turn connect my M1 MAX to the XDR Display with the Thunderbolt 3 cable, will my laptop then also be connected to the ethernet and thus the internet? Or do I really have to connect the ethernet straight to my M1 MAX?

Thanks!

Yes, you can plug a USB-C to Ethernet dongle into one of those ports and it will work well.

With newer Macs, including all M1 models, the Apple XDR display's three USB-C ports run at USB 3.1 Gen 1 speeds, or 5 Gbps. With older Macs (before 2019), the Apple XDR display's three USB-C ports run at USB 2 speeds, or 480 Mbps.

These speeds are higher than most (but not all) home internet connections, which means they probably won't limit your internet bandwidth.

On the other hand, if you use 10 Gbps Ethernet and use high-bandwidth devices like Network Attached Storage capable of operating at 10 Gbps, you will only get half of that bandwidth over the USB 3.1 Gen 1 connection to your Apple XDR display.

I have just received my brand new M1 Pro MBP16. So the time has come to finally ditch the old Apple Thunderbolt 27-inch display, which is happily soldiering on via a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. That old monitor has a gigabit ethernet port directly in the back of the monitor. When plugging the new MBP in to the monitor via the adapter, ethernet connection was recognised with zero problems.

I now want to buy the Pro Display XDR and plug the ethernet into that new monitor, via a USB-C to ethernet adaptor, into one of the three USB-C ports. Connection MBP to XDR will be direct, via the supplied thunderbolt cable.

The question is "will this work? Will the Mac recognise ethernet plugged into the XDR monitor via the Thunderbolt cable?" Reason for asking: the Apple tech specs for the monitor describe it the three USB-C ports as being "for charging and syncing". Does that include a pass-through ethernet connection?

Anybody out there done this?
