Gmail labels have disappeared in mail.

I recently used the erase deleted items and erase junk mail in my mail application on my macbook pro. After that one of my gmail accounts synced with apple mail now shows all my labels synched from that account are gone. But not from my other gmail acct. that is also synched with apple mail. I logged in to my gmail account through the browser and they are also gone from my account there. How can I restore them? Why would that simple action trigger the disappearance of them on both ends? I've had this account and labels I've built out for the last 15 years. Help!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12
