How can I move my Music library (files) to the cloud?

Right now, on my personal machine (2015 13" macbook pro, MacOS 11.6) I have my original digital music library going back 20 years (originally on Sound Jam MP). It takes up 150 gb so I have moved the files to an external to free up space. Everytime I open Music (itunes) it gets mad that the folder isn't connected and creates a new folder in a default location as well as ask me to find the files I want to play.

On all my other devices, I simply stream the files from the cloud. How can I convert my primary library to stream only?

Hi tasslehawf,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand you are needing to change where Music looks for your library, and that your music is stored on an external disk.

"Change where imported files are stored

  1. In the Music app on your Mac, choose Music > Preferences, then click Files.
  2. Click Change, then select a new location for your files.
  3. From now on, new songs and other items you import are stored in the new location. Songs you’ve already imported stay in their current location.

To go back to storing imported files in the default folder, choose Music > Preferences, click Files, then click Reset."

As discussed here: Change where your music files are stored on Mac

Cheers!
