I have a new M1 iMac 24" and tried to install the Monterey update today and after the download completed I got the following error: The package "%@" is missing or invalid
I went back in to Software Update and now my only option is to install an update for Big Sur. What happened??

I rebooted the computer and retried the update and that was enough to fix the problem. I was able to then successfully install the update without having to boot into Safe Mode.

Look in the Applications folder for a Monterey installer. If you find it delete it and try again but this time from a Safe Mode boot according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support.
Same I have the same problem, but they said it may have happened because I haven't updated the previous update, I think that's why..
