Internet issues on Monterey

Anyone else having Internet issues on macOS Monterey? I installed it last night and this morning I can only stay connected to the Internet for about 5-10 minutes before Safari gives a DNS issue. I've switched from using Google DNS to my ISP one, issue still persists. Flushed the DNS cache, issue still persists. Deleted all known networks, issue still persists.

Rebooting is the only way I can get Internet reconnected which is annoying every 10 minutes! was this OS not tested?????

Well the issue only happened after the Monterey update and only affects the only Mac that’s been updated to Monterey so you can see why I’d think that might be the issue.

As mentioned in my post only rebooting the Mac fixes the issue. Restarting just the browser does nothing. Nor does flushing the DNS cache, swapping to a different network, changing from wired to wireless, changing DNS from Google to ISP or trying a different browser. I can browse the Internet on Safari for about 10 minutes then Safari presents a DNS error that it’s not able to resolve the address. This issue also is present if I use Chrome, Edge or Brave browsers. So I think I’ve tried plenty of things to allow me to “draw the conclusion” that the issue has been caused by Monterey.

Can confirm. The number of sockets now remains stable, which indicates that the system correctly removes them once they are closed. This should prevent the runaway/exhaustion condition from popping up again. I will report if anything changes, but for now, it looks like Monterey 12.2 fixed the problem with Cisco AnyConnect.

Thank you mtohidn for correctly diagnosing the problem earlier.

The update to Monterey 12.2 seems to have fixed the issue with DNS stopping working after a time. I've been running netstat -anxv -p udp | wc -l after applying the update and instead of it counting up and up and up till DNS stops working. The number has been going up and down staying under 100 vs counting up to 30K+. It seems like something is cleaning up old UDP sessions.

In short upgrade to 12.2

Alas, I upgraded to 12.2 last night because I was having the failing DNS issue and the skyrocketing number of open sockets. Now, the sockets are stable and in the low hundreds, but I just had to reboot my computer because I couldn't get DNS working.

For reference, I do use Cisco AnyConnect. But I didn't see any issues with that after the upgrade.

We'll see if this was just a one-off issue, or I keep running into DNS issues on 12.2.

Hi, I have 3 Macs running Monterey, iMac and MacMini no problems.

My iMac is a 2013 running OCLP Monterey with updates, no problems!!

My MacBook Pro late 2015 with a clean install from Apple has peculiar problems with WiFi.

Sometimes when I boot up it refuses to connect, also when waking from sleep (lid closed)

Same MBP booting to Catalina or Bootcamp no wifi issues, DRIVING me a little crazy!!

Am about to install Big Sur in another volume and see if that does it!!

Fingers crossed for a result.

I'm having the exact same problem on my IMac after updating to Monterey and I'm beyond frustrated. I've tried all the suggested fixes with no success. This is clearly a software issues and not an issue with my network. All my other devices, including my Mac Book (which i have not updated to Monterey) have no problem connecting and staying connected. This has destroyed the functionality of my desktop. I regret updating and will not update my laptop to Monterey as a result.

After updating to Monterey 12.2.1 I immediately began having problems with websites freezing; I'd have to reboot the computer to get it to "unfreeze" only to have it freeze again later. My wife also started having issues with streaming videos freezing on her iPad. Finally I rebooted the router/modem and voila!, the problem disappeared. My suspicion is that the downloading of 12.2.1 (just a w.a.g.) did something to the modem...what, I could not say. It only takes a couple of minutes, worth a shot. Actually, I'm beginning to think that this (reboot the modem) should be the 1st step in any trouble-shooting exercise.

Having the same problem, and I believe that @mtohidn is correct. We use AnyConnect at my workplace, and several times yesterday my networking became unresponsive; had to reboot to get things working again. IT is recommending wiping the disk and re-installing the OS, which is not feasible right now. I also tried resetting the SMC, which seemed to help for the second half of yesterday, but ran into the issue again this morning.

Doesn't Mac OS have a command line tool to restart networking services? IIRC Ubuntu/Linux makes this possible though I don't recall the command.

I have this issue too with latest Monterey 12.2.1, the behavior is:

once in a few days, my Mac does not resolve DNS...

ping IP works, ping domain name does not resolve; (but "host domain" does return result, is that strange?)

Safari / Firefox do not work to browse internet, but Chrome works (maybe it has its own way to resolve DNS or have a local dns cache?)!

No firewall in place - so definitely not a firewall issue

Reset wifi profile (remove and add back or removing plist files etc.) do not help...

when issue happens, wifi and wired connections both have this issue...

changing dns server to local ISP's, google's public DNS or whatever - does not help...

no other way to fix, but a complete reboot of my Mac and everything goes back to normal...

that is a big pain..I am almost about to return my new Mac if I did not see this discussion thread and knew that it is probably a OS issue rather than a hardware issue...
