Screen flickering issue with full screen videos on safari after updating to Monterey

Guys... I think I just found out the cause (with your hints by setting mouse/resolution...).

I remember, before I upgraded mine to Monterey my screen (Samsung C49HG9x) told me, Freesync 2 is not enabled by MacBook Pro 16 (2019). After I upgraded I was happy to see Freesync 2 was enabled. I think the variable refresh rate caused the flickering!

I changed the refresh rate to fixed value, the flickering was gone then. Any fixed refresh rate works (no matter, 144Hz or the lower one like 59,88Hz). I changed back to "variable (48-144)", the flicker issue was there again till I changed back to fixed refresh rate. So this issue is reproducible.

I dunno why accessibility settings would affect (as some of you reported), maybe it disables variable refresh rate (maybe because it's not good for visually impaired persons?). Just a guess of me.

Guys... try out this setting and give feedback, if it helps. And also tell, which display you're using, especially if it has freesync (and maybe g-sync?). Maybe it gives Apple devs some idea to find a fix.

Also I want to know if anyone from Apple is reading here... since I didn't see any post from Apple. :/ I think Apple needs to take care of this issue.

Fixed: From "Accessibility->Display->Cursor" I changed the cursor size to large and then back to normal. This might be the stupidest solution I have ever seen, how is it even relevant? Anyways I'm glad it worked, thumbs up!

I may have figured it out! There is no more ‘energy saver’ feature in prefs, so after digging around online, it seemed that the ‘displays-> uncheck ‘try-tone’ box. That seemed to help.

Also update your OS; this seems to be a bug.

Thanks for the further details. It may be this issue is site specific and caused by the way these videos are encoded and streamed since it doesn't happen with local video files. Let's see if there is any change when you use Safari and your Mac in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Weird but changing cursor size worked for me to.

For me the cursor thing didnot work but inspired by stupidity I tried checking/unchecking all boxes and guess what: (just as weird) adjusting the display resolution worked for me!

You mentioned this happening in Safari. Does it happen in every site you visit for videos? For example, does it happen in Netflix and in YouTube?

Does it happen if you play a video thats stored on your Mac?

Does it happen if you use the Apple TV app on your Mac?

Today I found out, the screen was also flickering when I run Windows (with Parallels) fullscreen on external display. There were no video, just Windows Desktop itself with no program running. So it's not video related.

Was in Apple Music (running Monterey on a newer MacBook Pro) massive flickering!!! Booo! Have done the obvy pram/nav resets but nothing. Can’t find anything in preferences to fix this. Is it time for the Genius Bar??

Before updating to the new OS (Monterey), last night I got the screen flickering in my MacBook Pro M1. Some said updating to new OS will fix the issue. Updated. The problem still exists.

So far, I have tried:

-Display- Automatically adjust brightness-Disabled

-Accessibility- display- Color filter-Enabled

-Display-True tone- Disabled

-(as a few recommended) Accessibility-Display-Pointer(cursor)-changing to large and back to normal.

Tried everything. It just can’t seem to work.

This flickering started even before updating to new OS. Flickering is dramatic all over the screen. Has to be a software issue, right?

Hi, Since upgrading to MACOS Monterey yesterday I am getting lines flickering across the screen. happens in email, word docs anywhere really. different spots on the screen too. Will come and go and seems to have no rhyme or reason...

Any help out there for this ?

Same here getting real bad flickering since upgrading to Monterrey mainly in games. Using 27inch 2020 iMac 64GB DDR4 Ram, AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16GB Graphics Card. Is apple doing something about this?
