24" iMac, M1, 16GB
Only 2 apps open:
Brave Browser, 26 tabs, dialog box says 450mb used
Finder, says 383mb used
Rebooted less than one hour ago, these are the only two apps opened after rebooting.
I get this FAR more often on my M1 machines than my Intel machines, and I'm not doing anything different.
Is there a fix for this?

Sounds like a background process - or even one of those tabs in Brave - is out of control.
