Monterey crash on install ... broken error handling

Another OS ... another install issue.

This year it is "the package InstallAsstiant.pkg fails to meet Gatekeeper Policy'

I have no idea what this means. This is all of the information that Apple care to give ... nothing about what the package is ... how to delete/update it ... nothing.

A quick search suggests that this may be something to do with a 3rd party app ... but which one? Given the lamentable state of Apple apps ... it is almost totally 3rd party apps.

My biggest rant relates to the appalling error handling process. Wait 4 hours for it to download. A single unexplained error. No option to recover. Little useful information. Click on OK and then the Monterey upgrade disappears from system settings completely.

Start in Safe mode (presumably not loading 3rd party stuff) and my 4 hour download has also disappeared ... currently 12 hours to go!

The question is will it crash again in 12 hours time? How do I install this (and get rid of those awful Safari 'tab/buttons'?

After further searching on my SSD, the only reference to 'InstallAssistant' are two files are:

/Library/Apple/System/Library/Receipts/com.apple.pkg.InstallAssistant.macOSBigSur.bom and

/Library/Apple/System/Library/Receipts/com.apple.pkg.InstallAssistant.macOSBigSur.plist

The file names do not suggest a 3rd party problem.

There is no .pkg file with that name.

FWIW, the plist content is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<key>InstallPrefixPath</key>

<string>/</string>

<key>InstallProcessName</key>

<string>softwareupdated</string>

<key>PackageFileName</key>

<string>InstallAssistant.pkg</string>

<key>PackageIdentifier</key>

<string>com.apple.pkg.InstallAssistant.macOSBigSur</string>

<string>!#acl 1

</dict>

</dict>

</plist>

It looks to me, from the outside, as if this is an apple file. I am wondering off the Monterey installer itself has not got permission to install? Just guessing. Either way ... anybody got any suggestions? 11 hours of downloading to go ...

It finally installed ... but only after more errors ... this time as basic as 'an error occurred' ... !!! Even less information than before.

Usual teething problems ... data loss ... poorly contrasting UI ... broken search engine facilities ... I still cannot work out why they hhare still allowed to force us into one of four search engines ... without giving us the opportunity to change this to our own URL.

Forget EU vs App Store ... I have paid for that walled garden ... provided apple are actually reviewing apps ... look at the things I cannot change!
