Was this the Security Update 2021-007 (Catalina) released at the beginning of the week.

Then of course it is compatible with a mac running macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and a mac from 2017.

Are you sure you were speaking to an Apple tech.

Before you tried updating was your mac working well.

How much free space does your mac have, it is generally accepted to keep

at least 20GBs of free space on your macs internal drive at all time to ensure

your mac can do its own housekeeping.

You can get the standalone update here, https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2086?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US this will download to your Downloads folder. Once downloaded double-click to install.

This is often a more successful way of installing Security Updates than through System Preferences> Software Update.

If your mac is from 2017 you can run all operating systems that are there now. Thus also Catalina.

If you upgrade Catalina to a newer version of Catalina that easy to do.

If you have an older operating system you can do the upgrade to catalina by finding it (no in the Appstore), downloading and installing. If you have version 10.15.7 now on your computer already, there is no need to install it, because that is already the latest version.
