With Monterey update, can't see certain hard drives

After updating this morning, I can't see certain G-drive hard drives on my MacBook pro. Some that I formatted over a year ago are fine. The two new most recent ones won't appear. I have checked that the finder show all hard drives. Disk utility doesn't seem them either. However, when I plug them into another MacBook pro that hasn't been upgraded they appear in the finder. What should I do?

Thanks!

I can also confirm that using the apple branded usb-c to usb-c (the one used to charge the ipad or macbooks) work to access my external drives. But to clarify, to this not all cords are created equal mantra in the comments. This is true, not all cords are created equal, only the apple-branded usb-s charging cables work, not the much faster apple-branded Thunderbolt 3 cables. They do not work. They are the ones used for fast data transfer (probably like the ones that come with your external drives, non-branded) they are noticeably thicker than the charging cords. Looks like we are going to suffer slower data transfer rates until apple resolves this major issue.

That's not true.

Ports are not just go/no go connectors, there is a lot of software required for them to function as intended.

Don't summarily state the ports don't support the cables when it's likely to be that macOS needs to be tweaked.

Regardless, file feedback with Apple if you haven't already opened a case with Apple Support.

Unfortunately, it's not a holistoc solution. It will get your computer to see the drive (and mount it), but the data transfer rates provided by a USB-C charging cable are abysmal — try toggling from one recent Time Machine backup to one from months ago, for example.

I'm going to try an Applr branded USB-C cable designed for higher transfer rates today. Will report back if this helps.

Hi There
Here's my information about affected (and unaffected) gear
Macbook Pro 14" M1 Pro late 2021
Affected G-Drive mobile USB-C 5TB (2021)
Unaffected drive G-Drive mobile USB-C 4TB - this one is seen and is functional (2018)

I've also swapped many different USB-C cables - and swapped between the 3 ports on the MBP
I've also tried the drive attached to a USB hub on a Benq monitor - again, it doesn't work
However attaching either drive to the USB-2 Hub on an Apple Thunderbolt display and they both work

So - I think it's more likely to be the age of the drive than the capacity -
I hope they fix it soon!

Jono is right. I just ordered, and tried, an Apple USB-C cable (not the charging cable), and my G-DRIVE external disk would not mount. Meanwhile, the other one is working fine.

This is really frustrating. I was going to send the G-DRIVE back under warranty., but the fault lies with its integration with Monterey. I'm thinking of bringing my hard drive to the Apple Store and challenging them to mount the drive — maybe they'll find a cable that actually works (aside from the USB-C charging cable, which is a non-starter.)

All of my external drives continue to work perfectly, so it's not as simple as saying Apple "broke dongles"; my Seagate STEL8000100 Backup Plus 8TB drive has zero issues when connecting via the cable Seagate provided with the drive.

If you are experiencing this issue, contact Apple Support directly so they have better information as to which devices have issues and which don't.

I agree it's unprofessional - what confuses me is that if it came up in the betas surely they would have fixed it, my suspicion is that it was something which got broken by mistake just before the final release.

No, the problem is, to turn up in the beta process, one of the beta testers needs to have the hardware configuration that is failing.

As I stated, I have a variety of drives, none of which have an issue connecting to my Mac running macOS Monterey.

Other people have mentioned they have two models of a drive, one made in 2019 and one made in 2020 and the 2020 drive has issues, which seems to point to an issue with certain hardware interface chips.

I am having this mounting problem with my iMac. I went to the trouble of converting all 7 external drives I use to APFS & after a week’s work, the problem continues!!

The only method that works for me is to boot the Mac with no external drives and then to add each external drive, one at a time. This does work but is not really a long term solution.

i would prefer a long term solution & I suspect that an update to the OS may be the only effective solution

You can of course have a bad port; by calling the ports faulty the claim is made the issue is systemic, and that’s the issue I have.

If the ports themselves were in some way defective, adapters and cables wouldn’t be a workaround.

As I stated above, the best thing to do is to keep Apple Support up to date and to file feedback.

Note I also recall the Oxford 922 FireWire 800 bridge chip issue with MacOS X Panther that was only resolved via firmware updates for the drive enclosures involved.

I've now tried with a number of different cables, with a number of different responses

Apple cable - comes up with a message saying the drive is unreadable (but light on drive doesn't flash)

Most other cables - light on drive flashes and it shows in Disk Utility but won't mount

Two different cables - the computer restarted immediately

Clearly 12.0.1 doesn't fix it

WD say that it's Apple's call (probably agree)

I'll just have to wait!

If we’re looking for commonalities, here’s some info about the affected (and unaffected) gear:

iMac. 20,1 (late 2020, Intel, 32G RAM)

Affected drive: G-DRIVE mobile USB-C 4TB

Unaffected drive: G-DRIVE mobile USB-C 2TB — this one is seen, and is functional

I have swapped out the USB-C cables that were included on both G-DRIVE units; I have swapped ports, to see if that had an effect. I have gone into Recovery mode, and tried to mount the 4TB drive — nothing has worked.

The common features may be:

G-DRIVE external drives w/USB-C connections

Drive capacity of 4TB — not certain, but a lot of complaints from 4TB drive owners.
