iOS 15.1 broke connectivity to my car stereo

I own a 2014 Chevy Cruze. It has the factory default stereo in it.

The radio looks like this:

Prior to the iOS 15.1 update, when I plugged my iPhone Xr in to the car, the stereo would detect the iPhone, switch to it and I could play anything on the phone using a Lightning cable plugged into the car's USB port.

I took my wife's iPhone 12, which has iOS 14.8.1 on it, and it worked fine. I upgraded to 15.1 and again it stopped working.

I plug either phone in, they start to charge, but the stereo no longer detects the phone.

The obvious workaround is to just plug the aux cable into the headphone jack on the... Oh wait...

This is obviously a bug in iOS 15.1. I called Apple and reported it. I'm trying to send logs to Apple now.

The following are NOT correct answers:

  1. Get a new car
  2. Get a new car stereo

If you're going to say either of those in your comments, don't bother commenting.

If you've seen this in your car and have figured out how to fix it, please feel free to share.

If not, this is just a heads up that you may experience this issue if you have an older stereo in your car

I know I can use the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter, and that is my current workaround. But I can't do that and charge the phone at the same time, which is going to be a problem for long trips with GPS.

Is there anyone here that has had the USB issue with a vehicle that isn't manufactured by GM? I saw a Vauxhall user earlier which is a GM. I also noticed a Ford a few posts up, but they were able to un-pair/re-pair and fix the issue - I don't believe this is related to our issue.

Also noticed that the radio that the OP has a screen is very similar to mine. I'm assuming the brain is also the same. Below is a factory photo of my 15 Chevy Equinox - can anyone confirm that they too have this radio, or a different one? I'm wondering if this might be a radio specific issue. I can promise that it worked with 15, but once upgrading to 15.1, I've lost connectivity to the radio, but do have charging capabilities.

I went at with one of the reps for telling me that on the phone . I got a call back from a supervisor and they told me they are aware of the issue and the rep was not well trained or informed on what to say In the situation. The supervisor asked for my log info and wanted to trouble shoot. and. Regarding the update issues there aware of it all she said to just be patient amd no timetable. I wouldn’t doubt you get a call from a supervisor or email of apple attempting to contact you.

I was told by Apple , that it is a software update that needs to me done on my 2014 Chevy Cruze , I called Chevy and they said it is an update that is need at the dealership and it would be $100 , I know it’s the software in the radio because my ios15.1 phone worked on the usb on my wives 2020 equinox , I went to Walmart and bought this Bluetooth dongle and it works perfect , I recommend this as a $12 solution , until apple fixes this bug , apple need to make it compatible with the older radio again like the ios14.8 was , I can’t see anyone playing over $100 to update the software in the car , hopes this helps everyone, I know frustrating this has been .

Oh I have the same **** issue!!

When I plugged my iPhone with Spotify running, my Chevy doesn’t react like before(below ios15.1)

Wonder why this happened on some older GM models, my car is 2011 Camaro and I believe the radio system is designed for “iPod” (however the system is capable of playback via Bluetooth but it sounds horrible)

And I just plugged my iPod nano, everything backed on life….There’s definitely something wrong with the current iOS update.

Please fix this asap!!!!

have a call in to support .. will let u know

connected ... and calls work

but cant select BT as audio source

thinks iphone is ipod

BUT Spotify iOS15 thinks BT is connected and working ... its NOT!!

Probably iOS 14.8.1 is a typo error in your post.

I have no such issue with the two cars that I have. Maybe 2014 Chevy Cruze has not updated their software yet to be compatible with iOS 15.1

I have iPhone 4S iOS 9.3.6, iPhone 6 iOS 12.5.5, iPhone SE iOS 15.1, iPhone 8 iOS 15.0.2* and an iPad Pro iPadOS 15.1 and iPhone 12 Pro iOS 15.1. Prior to that, I had iPhone 3GS, which I have stopped using because it is carrier-locked.

*Not updated yet.

It’s been a bit of a pain, but I was able to download a copy of iOS 15.0.2 and get that on my phone, and it is working again. It was a pretty painful process for me since I didn’t have any backups to restore, so I had to manually download and log in to every app. But at least I can plug back in. Odd how many people I’ve seen have this issue with a Chevy Cruze. I’m a 2016 Chevy Cruze with the same green radio as OP. I’m just going to ride with 15.0.2 until I see that this bug is fixed (assuming they actually fix it.)

I spoke with apple twice there morons I only say it cause of the answers. They pretty much said get a new stereo or car. I’m not making it up. Try and call maybe you’ll have better luck I called with 2 diff tech reps. From what I noticed it’s a lot of chevys or people that have stocked stereos in cars that don’t have CarPlay and yea the new update does not fix the issue . Downgrade the ios is the best option.

i have a 2012 chevy cruze and i’m experiencing the same issues with the iOS 15.1 update. i spoke with several different people today regarding this issue, and they’ve basically put me through the ringer. i even spoke with a senior advisor over the phone, shared my screen, and we went through all my settings. i had to open my camera at one point so they could see everything going on. they kept asking about carplay even though i explained multiple times that my car is 9 years old with a traditional radio, and i was connecting through an old iphone charger through the USB port.

long story short, they’re requiring me to use an iphone without 15.1 to see if it works to then take my/all of our cases to engineers to classify whether it’s a software issue or not, which it is. my only other *temporary* option is an aux cord, but we all know we aren’t able to skip songs from the SRC which is dangerous af.

i’ll keep anyone who cares updated because this is annoying.

This happened to me, too!! I have a 2013 Cruze with that same radio and my iPhone 12 Pro Max stopped connecting via the USB port after updating to iOS 15.1. I have an iPhone XR for work and it doesn’t have the iOS 15.1 update, and it connects perfectly fine. Something with the software changed.

Like, I get it. It’s an old car. But at the same time, it’s not like we’re asking for much. No other version of iOS caused this issue, not even iOS 15.0. Apple, instead of telling us to get new cars or car radios, how about fixing what you screwed up instead.
