iOS 15.1 broke connectivity to my car stereo

I own a 2014 Chevy Cruze. It has the factory default stereo in it.

The radio looks like this:

Prior to the iOS 15.1 update, when I plugged my iPhone Xr in to the car, the stereo would detect the iPhone, switch to it and I could play anything on the phone using a Lightning cable plugged into the car's USB port.

I took my wife's iPhone 12, which has iOS 14.8.1 on it, and it worked fine. I upgraded to 15.1 and again it stopped working.

I plug either phone in, they start to charge, but the stereo no longer detects the phone.

The obvious workaround is to just plug the aux cable into the headphone jack on the... Oh wait...

This is obviously a bug in iOS 15.1. I called Apple and reported it. I'm trying to send logs to Apple now.

The following are NOT correct answers:

  1. Get a new car
  2. Get a new car stereo

If you're going to say either of those in your comments, don't bother commenting.

If you've seen this in your car and have figured out how to fix it, please feel free to share.

If not, this is just a heads up that you may experience this issue if you have an older stereo in your car

I know I can use the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter, and that is my current workaround. But I can't do that and charge the phone at the same time, which is going to be a problem for long trips with GPS.

No one’s trying to belittle or bully anyone.

I have a 2011 Toyota and a 13 Pro Max running iOS 15.1 that works perfectly with USB audio, so your list of vehicles is in no way all-inclusive.

I’ve also tested on a friend’s Mercedes and another Toyota, also with no issues, nor are there any with home stereo equipment from Denon or a 24 channel mixing board made by Mackie.

You list a wide variety of auto manufacturers, but this issue is not even universal among all of their models and head end units.

Remember also that this is not a place to “vent” - social media and other websites are for that. This forum is for people to ask technical questions which are then answered by other Apple users.

The correct approach is one I have advised in multiple responses; if you are seeing this issue, contact Apple Support directly:

I own an Opel Astra GTC 2013. A few minutes ago, I called to support and the girl on other side tells me that I should update my stereo. I told her that I can’t update stereo in 8 years old car (cd400). Then she told me that she can’t help me, and I can write to apple.com/feedback. I think this is ridiculous. Almost a month we have that issue, but they told same sings that in october.

Just got off the phone with support:

They mentioned that iOS 15 does not support connecting through the dock with some GM models. They provided the car manual to update the software. To update the software, you have to go to a dealership and get it done by them. My local dealership was charging me $188 for this and they mentioned it might not fix the issue. I declined. Not spending $188 for a **** software update when it should be FREE but thats a GM issue.

The owners manual suggested to reset radio settings to factory default. I did that and still did not work. I am not willing to pull out the fuse cause I dont think its going to work as my sisters iPhone X running iOS 14.8 still plays music properly.

As a former Apple technician, I ALWAYS wait before updating iOS cause there are ALWAYS issues. I monitor websites to make sure that those issues have been fixed and I was unaware that this was happening to GM cars at the time. When I updated to iOS 15.1 the next day they stopped signing downgrades to iOS 15.0.2 and now I am stuck on 15.1.1.

This absolutely ***** and might or might not be fixed by Apple. Apple has a habit of doing dumb stuff like this and I dont get it and thats why I ALWAYS wait for a stable version of the latest iOS before updating. I dont know why they have to removefunctionality in the software instead of just adding functionality.

Anyways, the only choice many of us have is to keep complaining to Apple Support and constantly escalating it. Remember, those technicians are here to help you but at the same time, getting a new infotainment center and getting a new car are unacceptable answers by anyone and especially a technician.

Only option we have now is to wait for future updates and hope it solves them.

I will update if I find another solution.

I figured it out with a '20 Subaru Outback with factory head unit. CarPlay worked with the USB cable plugged in. Unplugged the cable to establish BlueTooth connectivity. I had to delete my iPhone from the car and delete the car from my iPhone in BlueTooth settings. Then I had to add the iPhone back to the car and reestablish connectivity with the car in the iPhone. Basically, delete all BlueTooth connections between the car and the phone and start from scratch.

IT dinosaurs are already acquaint with this "reset that solves" solution (but not). It was a jokes years ago, so-called "Microsoft solution". All my respect for anyone who thinks otherwise, or get success. But I think we shouldn't waste our time trying solving a problem created by Apple. Our case results from an intentional modification in this feature, probably a technological evolution that cause old hardware stop working to force consumer to buy something newer (and all Apple's users knows what I'm talking about). In this case, they did it without anounce, and they didn't expect the impact will be so great. Now let's pray to new iOS release reverses what they did.

I also have a 2015 Chevy Cruze and since the update can not connect my phone. I have also changed cords an no app or website will work. I’m beyond frustrated.
