how often does iCloud sync a Word doc on my MacBook?

I am working on a novel and every time I Save it, I then Save As to iCloud, just to be sure. Is this necessary? I do have my Documents folder selected under the iCloud Options menu. When i only hit Save, it does look like the file is updated in iCloud, but because this is so important to me, i want to know for sure. thanks!

I believe you are correct -- but can't say that with 100% certainty. I only replied because I'm thinking you may want to use Microsoft OneDrive instead of iCloud, especially if you already have a Microsoft 365 subscription. See the information in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/what-is-autosave-6d6bd723-ebfd-4e40-b5f6-ae6e8088f7a5
