iphone 'speaker' button-how to eliminate the pop up menu

This nonsense just started after iOS 14.8--don't know why it JUST started on my phone since others have had this problem for a while and I didn't--the only time I ever saw this was if I was in my car, the phone was connected through the car, and I tried to answer directly on the phone and not the car.

Now, whether in car or out, the 'speaker' button is no longer labeled 'Speaker' but 'Audio' (the icon is still a speaker…right there is a lapse in GUI design that is indicative of the whole problem).  When a call comes in, and you press (what used to be) 'Speaker' to talk after answering--which I have done ever since I started using iphone--you are greeted with the 'audio' submenu, which in itself is not quick to use--two of the choices are iphone and speaker...well, gee, I'm on my iphone and I just pressed what I thought was speaker but now I have this choice—what the heck-- and the two or three second lag it takes to process this and respond leaves callers on the other end saying hello, hello, hello.

This 'feature' may be well intended or have usefulness for some situations, but for trying to turn the phone into a speakerphone during a call, it is HORRIBLE.

When your iPhone requires more steps for basic phone functionality than...a basic phone, then you are on the wrong track from a design perspective.

None of the 'suggestions' for returning the button to 'Speaker' that have posted thus far in this thread work. And for the record, wholesale toggles like turning bluetooth off are not an answer--I don't want to have to remember to turn BT on every time I get in my car! Or change back some other setting just so I can have basic 'Speaker' functionality without sub-menus.

I can see where this 'menu' of audio options can be useful as far as connectivity to other devices are concerned (the choices "iphone" and "speaker" take care of themselves if the speaker button is a ‘speaker’ button), so if you want, provide a separate means to access audio connectivity options. But don’t mess with the Speaker button!

'Speaker' should be plain, boring and QUICK. Just like that wired phone some of us still have on our desks.

Hi bvmac91,

We'd love to assist you with your speaker concern. It is expected behavior for the device to show the audio options and menu when the device is connected to Bluetooth devices or accessories. This allows you to choose where they call will come through. If this is the case when the issue occurs with you, then we'd recommend leaving feedback on the process here: Product Feedback

Best regards
