Does iPhone 11 support the new 5G platform?
iPhone 11
Thank you. AT&T sent me a free phone to replace my 5. It is an iPhone Xr. I thought it they said it was compatible with 5G. I also have a 7 Plus that they said is already compatible with 5G.
What am I missing?
AT&T has a different definition of “5G” than the rest of the industry.
They support an enhanced version of LTE they call “5G Evolution” or “5G E” because they consider it a “stepping stone” to true 5G.
Only the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models support true 5G.
The iPhone 11, SE 2020 and older phones only support “5G E” or LTE.
So if you have AT&T, if the service indicator says “5G E” it’s not true 5G, it’s just enhanced LTE.
If you see “5G” it’s actual 5G.
If you see “5G UW” (Verizon) or “5G+” it’s the shortest range but fastest flavor of 5G, “mm
wave 5G.”
No, only the iPhone 12 and 13 support 5G.
Thank you so much for that answer! Very helpful, very complete and the first time I’ve heard this.
may I ask a follow up question? How will my 7 Plus behave with the LTE 5G?
Phones older than the iPhone 8 like your 7 Plus don't support "5G E" where your Xr would.
In reality it doesn't make much of a difference as "5G E" is basically just LTE anyway.
Thank you.
