MacBook Air M1 accessories

Trying to use my old sd card reader and it was not recognized. I have the USB adapter. What am I doing wrong. Or do I have to buy a new card reader ( mine is 10 + yrs old..)

The card reader on its own will not show up anywhere except in System Profiler. You must insert a card into the reader that is formatted in a way macOS understands and then the card, not the reader, will show up in Finder and the desktop.

The age should not really matter, as those types of readers follow a universal standard.
