macOS Monterey takes 25+ minutes to boot

I actually had to buy a Windows laptop. I cannot be down, too much rides on my technology. Will never be all Apple again, this was a tough teaching moment.

Does it fix the slow boot time bug?

No it isn't unfortunately. At least at my side boot time raised from 5 to 6 minutes now. Very, very frustrating!!!

I had a brand new external Samsung T5 2GB given to Apple to install the OS and transfer the data from my other T2, and still the same. Just to share my situtaion.

Same issue here also with system on external SSD drive.

In addition I have various problems and slowdowns in copying and moving files from finder. So frustrating.

I was so impressed with the quality of Big Sur that I thought that Apple was really on its A game, so I allowed Monterey… BIG MISTAKE.

Well, for you anyway. Are all of these people wrong? Were the Apple Geniuses who could not fix them wrong? It took a few days for them to simply update Monterey to the .1 release.

Yes very very frustrating

I have a 2015 13" MBP w/ 16 GB of RAM that is exhibiting the super slowness booting up. It is not connected to external storage. It took somewhere around 45 minutes to be able to get to a point where I could do anything. I usually wait to upgrade and am kicking myself for this one.

Still got the same problem, taking about 15 mins to start up. But after reading around, it seems it's not isolated to external drives, although Monterey does have a big USB problem which has been widely publicised, so that's another thing.

My best guess is that it's related to Kernel Integrity Protection... apparently the new M1 Macs have a dedicated processor just for this, but it seems they may have overlooked it on Intel Macs.

Just before it hangs, it says that it's ignoring the kextcache and then proceeds to take 15 mins scanning kexts by the looks of it. Be interesting to know if it's just a result of upgrading or whether it's still occurs with new installs as well. I suspect it's just the former. If so, I might do a fresh install on another NVMe and try that.

Dodgy upgrades seems to be a consistent theme with all types of operating systems, I usually end up doing a new install as the system gets clogged up with old buggy software and abandoned files & drivers due to poor uninstalls. Not a bad thing to start afresh, just really frustrating that upgrades are still so poorly implemented.

On the plus side... after logging in and leaving it to settle down, Monterey seems to be running ok on my 2015 iMac. Although not tried plugging in my USB hubs yet! 😬

Reformatting my SSD drive in ASAF with a partition, and then loading Monterey on that, I am able to boot up very quickly (on a 2017 iMac). Prior to that, the internal Fusion drive was taking about 5-10 minutes to complete booting.
