on start up goes straight to disk utility tools?
On restart iMac goes straight to Disk Utility tools and Disk Repair states cannot repair disk

Check to see that Disk Utility is not listed in the System/Users & Groups/Login Items preference pane. And that Disk Utility is not open and this checkbox is not checked when shutting down:

cannot get that far!!!!
When you boot up you are in Disk Utility, right? Just quit out of it or force quit out of it and go from there.
