MacOS 12.0.1 - Time Machine can't read the prior sparcebundle on Time Capsule?

I upgraded the OS to 12.0.1 2 days ago and thought everything was doing fine. Then I noticed the sparcebundle file on my TimeCapsule hadn't been opened, roughly since I upgraded. Time Machine is happily running without error but it must be backing up to local snapshots - not really a good solution if I have a HW failure.

At times I can force an error message by removing the backup disk and then adding it again. It connects to the time capsule just fine (and reports free space) and doesn't complain about the sparcebundle until it attempts a backup.

Thoughts?
