Files and folders aren't showing on my desktop

On my mac I can't see any files and folders on the desktop. I can find them through my finder but the don't show in my desktop if I minimize the finder. I can't right click and create a new document/folder in desktop as well. As if the right click option gets disable when in desktop. I am a new mac user and I have no idea why it is happening. Can someone please help?
