Airpods max call routing

So, my calls route to my airpods even when I’m not wearing them. Head detection is enabled and it works fine with music/media (i.e. it is paused when I remove my headphones), but calls go to the airpods even if I’m not wearing them. Is that the intended behavior, a setting that can be changed or a bug? I’ve got an iPhone Xs with the latest iOS version and the latest firmware on my airpods max (4a400).

I actually figured it out on my own. It’s a setting in accessibility -> touch -> call audio routing. It was set to “Bluetooth headset” instead of automatic, that was the issue.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, Dimon.94.tex.

If we understand your post correctly, when you receive a call the audio automatically goes to your AirPods Max if connected even if you're not wearing them. We’d like to help.

When you receive a call and wireless headphones or speakers are connected the call will default to them. You can change the call to the audio output of your choice with the steps in the "Adjust the audio during a call" section of this article:
