Apple Pencil Return

Hi, I recently got an apple pencil for my birthday but then we realized it was the wrong generation. It has been more than for days since my parents bought it but it hasn't been opened. We need to return it for the first generation apple pencil instead of the second generation. Are we still able to exchange or return it.
