Connects to WiFi but not to internet

My iPad connects to home WiFi but not for browsing. Will download and send emails, but if there is a link to a site, it will not open. Other user’s iPad, right near my iPad, will open internet sites no problem.

iPad, iPadOS 15

Hello Lotus Pilot.

Thank you very much. I am now replying to you using my WiFi instead of cellular data. I rebooted the router, and when I tried to access sites on both Safari and on Google Chrome, it worked. Thank you, really, very much.

I don’t know why this happened. Have had the router a year or so now, but even with the prior one (upgraded for better security) I don’t recall this happening.

Best regards.

Start here:

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support

A “no internet connection” warning, if you see one, usually indicates that your device does not have a routable IP Address - this usually being assigned by DHCP.

If you have a VPN App or profiles installed, or a security App such as Norton, these may be interfering with DHCP and preventing your device from obtaining a valid IP Address for your iPhone hotspot - or the WiFi network to which you are attempting to connect. The resolution is usually simple; if installed, you may only need to temporarily disable or remove the Security App and/or VPN.

DHCP is frequently used to automatically obtain an IP Address. Until your iPad has a valid IP Address to connect to your network, you will not have an internet connection. Disabling or removing VPN and/or the offending security App should allow DHCP to operate normally - allowing connection to your network and the internet.

If this resolves your issue, the VPN and/or security App can be reinstated after the connectivity problem has been resolved.

Your router may be unexpectedly blocking access to some internet resources; a restart of your WiFi Router may also resolve the problem.

To restart you home router, disconnect power - then wait at least 30 seconds before restarting. When you router has rebooted (which may take several minutes), force-restart your iPad:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

I am connected to my home WiFi. I can print on my printer through WiFi. Also, I can get and receive emails (which are through the internet of course). But when anything tries to open a site on the web, say a link in an email, the site will not open. Eventually it times out. So I have WiFi connection, can get emails. It’s only opening sites on the internet it will not do.

Additionally, I then switch to cellular and turn off WiFi. Then I can open all the sites, but I’m using too much data.

Thank you!
