New iPhone - Carrier Unlocked or Locked

I decided to get away from buying iPhones through my carrier. I just ordered a new iPhone through Apple's website. It gave me an option to choose my carrier or unlocked. I chose my carrier (AT&T). I then chose Apple Card Monthly Installments. Which was a weird to begin with. I went to checkout and it said they couldn't approve monthly installments, so I tried it two other times and it finally worked on the 3rd try (I already have an Apple Card with a pretty good credit limit and zero balance. I pay off the Apple Card every month). Anyway, that's a question for another day, why I would get that "unapproved message".

Anyway, so I ordered the phone, chose AT&T as my provider and picked Apple Card Monthly Installments. Please let me know if my thinking is correct:

The phone will arrive ready to go and all I need to do is activate via the on screen instructions

I'll pay Apple for the phone

Phone will be unlocked (or will this be locked even though I made sure NOT to choose AT&T installments)

Is my line of thinking correct?

Hi SachimoTx,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you have some questions about your purchase, and we'd love to help. If you purchased your device from the Apple Online Store, and did not finance it through your carrier, the device will come unlocked. Check out the link we've provided below for more information.

Why buy iPhone anywhere else?

Please let us know how it goes. We're always happy to help.

Cheers!
