Compressor error: System Error = -9074 {Unknown Error: -9074}

After updating to Monterey last week, one of our iMac Pros gives us this error when sending a job from Final Cut to Compressor:

We have trashed the Compressor prefs in Library/App Support, reinstalled Compressor and even reinstalled the OS, still same issue. We also granted full disk access to Compressor in System Prefs/Security, still same issue. Any help appreciated.

Like a lot of you I am having the same issue since last October 2021 and yes its has become very frustrating. I use Compressor to transcode direct from my FCPX and encoding my videos with metadata like Author, Copy-write and more. I have tried all of the above to fix this issue including reloading Compressor but to no avail, so like everyone else I will be following this forum and looking for updates which hopefully Apple will have as fix for this PRO Software soon!

macOS Monterey 12.2.1

Mac Pro 6.1 (Late 2013)

3.5 Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5

AMD FirePro D500 3GB

FCX 10.6.1

Compressor 4.6

DaVinci Resolve 17.4.4 Studio

May be this worked for you, but not for me... I just renamed an old project in " film " (of course without the quotes).

And this does not change anything to the problem.

I am afraid we will have to wait for the good will of Apple to solve this problem raised in Octobre 2021. And we are now in March 2022. Will we really continue to trust Apple for that problem?

And what will be next bug... impossible to share a FCPX project...?

Or is it time to go and try Adobe products...

Many thanks for sharing this solution which seems really very simple, if not simplistic...

I tried this procedure and restarted the creation of a video with Compressor. Fantastic! It worked... the first time...

And then, as I suspected, subsequently again a 100% failure rate. In fact, it doesn't change anything at all, since from the beginning I've had success with Compressor from time to time. One time out of 10... or less!

No, it really is time for Apple to take a serious look at this problem. I have no intention of buying a new mac with an M1 processor, while other than Compressor the system works great. It must also be said that I paid the price for it.

Very good that it worked with you too! :)

I did another test, if during the generation by the compressor press the pause or cancel, the problem comes back.

Just redo the restart process in safe mode that works again.

We really have a bug, i.e. in the compressor or with macOSmonterey.

I updated macOS on the second day 07 and from this date I went through this problem with the compressor.

How many tickets have been opened for this? Wondering if I should do the same or not (does Apple move faster if several tickets are submitted for the same issue?). I discovered this problem last night.

I did manage to FINALLY get my 2 hour 1080 project processed through compressor as I intended WITHOUT first rendering in FCP, and only after rebooting the iMac (late 2015, running latest Monterey, FCP, & Compressor). I wondered if not rendering the project made any difference, but during the day today I discovered it does not. Multiple fails testing.

I did come across an error/warning, where an ".export-archive2 file" was missing - I don't know if that means very much. I discovered it after I pressed the "re-try" circular arrow in Compressor.

I have multiple texts, fades, and plug-ins in the project, so at first I thought it might be a memory issue, or even a render file issue (FCP keeps forgetting where the render files are, so I had to keep re-rendering), but after reading everyone's posts, it sounds like maybe it could be a Monterey vs. Compressor bug.

Has anyone tried https://www.digitalrebellion.com/

They have a download that supposedly fixes issues with Compressor (but maybe it doesn't address anything like what we're dealing with).

It still fails on x86 Monterey 12.3, using FCP 10.6.1 and Compressor 4.6. Even though the problem began with Monterey on x86, it might have exposed an underlying app-layer bug that requires a Compressor fix.

Some benchmarks related to the Mac Studio release indicated they were done on a pre-release version of FCP 10.6.2. It seems plausible that new versions of FCP and Compressor may be released in March, so that would be the next item to test, whenever it becomes available.

I currently boot into Big Sur if I need to export a batch sent from FCP to Compressor. I can "share" in FCP in Monterey with no issues. I just cannot send to Compressor. While the engineers at Apple Support are looking into this, I found out what the issue was, at least for me.

In Monterey, if my project has any title in it, anywhere at all, it will crash Compressor. Remove the title and the project sends to Compressor and all works fine. It's the title! (at least in my case). I tried using various built in titles with the default typeface. I then tried a couple of other typefaces. I used Basic Title which has no effects. It didn't matter. Title in project means broken Compressor.

Keep in mind that before this I reset the SMC, the PRAM, I booted into safe mode, and it did not fix anything. I created a new partition and installed a clean copy of Monterey, and ran the updater. I downloaded FCP and Compressor from the App store. I installed nothing else. Same result as before. I took a project and duplicated it multiple times. I removed, one by one, everything in the project. I had a PNG file that was a watermark. I had transitions. I had FCP color correction. I had an audio filter. And I had a title at the beginning above a short video clip. Once I removed the title, leaving the short video clip that ran under it, everything worked. Finally, I created a project and put only a Basic title in it. I did not modify the title. Compressor failed.

I have sent all of this to Apple Care Support and I’m waiting to hear back from the engineers.

iMac Pro. Recently updated from Mojave (which worked flawlessly. Why, oh why, did I update?!) to Monterey. Same stinking -9074 error. To reduce complexity, I have NO titles and NO transitions (I stacked my clips and used opacity on the top clip as a sort of rudimentary transition/fake multiclip). Same stinking -9074 error no matter which Compressor output I choose. So I'm dead in the water.

I don't see Apple needing the money to get the very, very few of us who use FCP and Compressor to switch over to M1. It certainly wouldn't be worth the ensuing class action lawsuit, regardless of merit.

I just see this as a low priority for Apple. It works perfectly fine in Big Sur which I boot into to use Compressor. A pain, but workable.

Sooner or later Apple will fix this. We just need to keep the pressure up. I have AppleCare and opened a case about 6 weeks ago. I just keep asking for updates on the case. We shouldn't have to do this, but I guess we do.

See, I'm one of those odd ones who still needs Compressor for some things. DVD's, for example. I cannot Share to files that I need for DVD Studio Pro. I'm sure you're snarkily wondering why anyone would still a) use DVDs, and b) DVD Studio Pro. First off, none of your business. It's my business - literally. I do a lot of event videography, which included school plays. Parents and grandparents still LOVE physical media. Yes, I have a Vimeo Pro account, and host them there both for rent and purchase. However, I can't seem to wean people from DVDs and BluRays. And I have tried MyDVD, DVD Styler, Leawo Creator, and others. They suck. Massively. And Share to DVD or BLuRay does not work for me as it is not granular enough for chapters, etc. DVD Studio Pro always creates perfect discs. So having a program that actually prepares files for those formats is important. Having Compressor work without (apparently) removing Apple titles from the project, etc. is not a workaround. It's a bug, and a serious one.

The snark has nothing to do with the old technology or to get over the failings of the software. It doesn’t work for me either. The little snark is that you would be “forced” to buy a new computer when all you need is to run an older OS. It’s not convenient but the system can be booted into Big Sur and the software used there.
