Monterey maps performance is really bad

Maps is having all kinds of trouble, slow to respond, taking minutes to load, etc. It is almost useless! A 2020 iMac with gigabit internet connection should not be so terrible. Why is maps getting worse every iteration?

Hello, and welcome to Apple Support Communities dijonclone,

We can see you're having an issue with Maps loading while using macOS Monterey.

Let's see if the steps included in this guide help: If Maps isn't working on your Apple device. We'd want to make sure that you follow the steps under "If you can't find your current location on your Mac", then test out finding your location or searching for another.

You'd want to rule out any internet connection issues by trying different websites or seeing if you're able to stream content without any issues. Use this to check your router settings: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

If it's still not working, use the information under "If you need to report an issue in Maps or add a missing place" in the first guide. Follow the directions under "On your Mac" to report this to Apple.

We hope this helps!

I removed all of the Kernel extensions I wasn't actively using, and the same with the system modifications. I removed Sophos and Malware bytes. But I draw the line at dumping Little Snitch (though of course I know if it is actively blocking some port or app that is transporting Maps tile data then that could cause a problem).

I tried maps again after deleting/uninstalling all of this stuff and temporarily disable the LS network monitor. It made no difference.

Now I didn't delete everything that was mentioned above.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud installs something like 10 systems extension and modifications as best I can tell. I need those for work.
  • I do use Bjango's iStat Menus.
  • The oldest and most janky extension I use is for my Drobo. If there is a plausible reason this might be interfering I'd be interested in hearing it.
  • I have a few Logitech accessories. There are a few agents, and extensions that have to run. Logitech Options being the principle creator of most of these.
  • As for my configuration profiles. These are work related and though they dont allow management of the machine, they do have VPN Auth related certificates and info. To be clear, the issues with Maps exist either on or off VPN.

I'm not sure if this is the same as the other people in this thread. But the issues seem to exist exclusively for loading map tile data. Looking at my network activity. When I am mousing around and loading new tiles, I never really top 500KB/s though often its more like 300KB/s mostly.

On the other hand when I am doing Look Around I often pull 3-5MB/s and that portion of the app is very responsive.

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the Etrecheck's Privacy preference pane so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click and read the About info to further permit full disk access.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to include the report in your reply.

I am not an Apple apologist, but I have this model

which is a step lower than others reported here. I hadn't even tried Maps after upgrading to Monterey, so I ran it and it loaded my location with satellite imagery in less than a second (as far as I can measure). I tried locating some businesses and it refreshed the screen with satellite maps imagery in a second or two. Just reporting what I see, certainly not denying that others have a real issue. But I think a fundamental flaw with all these 16-inch 2019 Macbook Pro Intel laptops would have shown up across the board.

Someone with the problem should post an Etrecheck report in case there is a conflict with something else installed ...

I am also having the same problem. My iMac is also a 2020 iMac. I have a friend who has a 2017 iMac and updated to Monterey and on hers maps is running just fine. Not much to so on but it looks like maybe its specific to 2020 model of iMac.

Like the other post (from dialabrain) below says it more local. It does not appear to be very widespread. Otherwise there would be a lot of posts here and also on the AppleMaps subreddit on Reddit. But I have only seen one other post there. Have not looked at the Apple or macOS subreddit.

I am working with a Senior Advisor (she also checked and does not see it being wide spread) to find out what is wrong. She has spoken with the engineers and they had me do a screen recording and also to gather log and system files to study.

HOWEVER, it would best if you would call Apple support. When the automated system asks what system or service you are having problems with say "Maps". This should get you to a support specialist more familiar with Maps app. Then advise them what problem you are having and you can also mention that you have heard of at least one other with the same problem and that person is working with a senior advisor who has elevated the problem.

IT WOULD BE BEST if you do as it will help to have Apple aware that others are having the same problem. Maybe they have gotten some other calls about it. Not everyone will post to online forums.

But please call Apple support about the problem. The more who do the more data points for the engineers to find the problem especially if it is localized to a certain model of iMacs.

Yes I have tried it in Safe Mode. I also created a new admin account and skipped through the setup and tried that.

Went so far as to backup all my data. Then booted on a usb installer, erased the drive then did a clean install of Monterey.

Same results maps will take 5 to 8 seconds to load. Satellite view takes 5 to 10 seconds or more to load. Scroll around and wait 5 to 8 seconds to load. 3d in satellite would be even slower. Only thing that worked normally was Look Around.

Nope that's not it at all.

After a number of things. I booted the iMac on a usb installer disk and erased the iMac and then did a clean install of Monterey. Then only did the startup configuration. Did not reinstall any 3rd party apps. Only apps on the iMac were apps installed by the Monterey installer.

Same results maps in any view would take 5 to 10 seconds to load and render the maps or satellite views. Same when you scroll around.

So definitely not any 3rd party app or extension.

Also forget to mention. I'm not sure that it is only 2020 model of iMac. Just saying I have only seen 3 posts about Map problems in Monterey. One was on Reddit and did not say what model. The original poster here and I have 2020 iMacs. So only 2 verifiable hardware data points are 2020 iMacs. Am trying to find out from the reddit poster what model he has.

If you haven't yet then Please call Apple Support about the problem. When I first called there were not many if reports to them yet. Even only a couple on here and only one on Applemaps subreddit forum.

So the more people who call then Apple will know that it is more widespread.

I am working with a Senior Advisor who is working with Apple Engineers on the problem. They are having me collect data off my system.

So if you call support about the problem you can advise them that others have called and it will help.

Thanks.
