All current models of iPad (i.e., the 2021 iPad9, iPad mini6, iPad Air4 and 11” and 12.9” models of iPad Pro) all use a USB-C port. Many older models of iPad instead use an Apple Lightning port.
For USB-C equipped models of iPad, you can directly connect USB Storage (such as a “pendrive”). USB-C devices do not require an adapter, whereas USB Storage that has the larger USB Type-A connector will require use of an adapter, or perhaps more usefully, a USB hub.
There many good quality USB-C hubs that incorporate additional USB-C and USB Type-A ports, SD/microSD card readers, Ethernet LAN, HDMI and other ports. Good hubs are designed to allow simultaneous connection of a Power Adapter or PowerBank battery, this being essential to allow simultaneous charging and to provide power for some external storage devices.
Perhaps consider Kingston, Anker, Hyperdrive and Satechi - although there are many others from which to choose. A Google Search for USB-C Hubs compatible with iPad will find a number of articles and recommendations. Speaking of personal experience, the Kingston Nucleum has proven itself to be particularly flexible - featuring twin USB3.0 Type-A, downstream USB-C and SD/microSD card slots, HDMI, plus a power pass-through USB-C port that can accept +45W from a suitable USB power source.
Apple market their own adapter. Whilst the adapter offers a single USB Type-A and an HDMI port in addition to a pass-though USB-C connection for power, the adapter may be less useful than a full USB hub:

If your iPad has an Apple Lightning connector, to connect USB storage you will require an Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter:
