External Mic Not Recognised (Monterey 12.0.1)

Hi;

Just updated to Monterey (12.0.1) on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) and now none of my external mics are not being recognised as peripheral inputs within the sounds section (Preferences -> Sound -> Inputs).

I'd prefer not to roll-back to Big Sur, but I'll have to as my work depends on a decent sound input. Any hacks or workarounds greatly appreciated.

My mic is connected to a USB 3.1 (Gen 2) StarTech hub which, in turn, connects to a Mac mini (2018) USB 3.1 (Gen 2), Type C connector port.

I would try changing the USB cable to see if that helps. When you reset the computer, make sure that it's powered down for at least 30 seconds (apparently this is the equivalent of an SMC reset on M1-based Macs). If you have a USB power pack, try powering the mic with it and check the headphone output to see if there's a signal. If not, I would suspect that the mic itself has malfunctioned.

As you can see below, my mic is providing an audio input.

Hope this helps.

Hi @BlueberryLover,

I have the AT2020USB+ that I'm trying to use on my M1 Mac mini. I've tried plugging it through my thunderbolt dock USB port (Monterey recognises it), but when in Sound preferences the mic is recognised, the input level does not move (no sound input). I tried testing in Audio Software and Zoom, result are the same, no sound input.

I tried plugging the AT2020USB+ directly to USB-A port on my Mac mini , no input. Got a USB A to C convertor and plugged that to the USB-C port on the Mac mini, no input.

In all the tests, the mic was recognised and listed on Sound preferences, and I'd also done shutdowns/restarts, no input.

Did your AT2020USB+ work right from the start? Am I missing anything here?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Yes it did. Actually the Mic was already listed as one of the sound inputs and outputs. And I see it in System info. But when I tested, the input levels were not moving at all. I also tested in Windows 11, and got the same results. I also tried your suggestion and connected the USB to a power bank, listened through the headphones and did not get any audio coming out of the mic. I had earlier tested the headphone output and was able to get sound when playing music on my Mac.

So the conclusion is that likely the Mic is faulty. I've made arrangements for Audio Technica to service/fix the Mic.

Thank you very much Pie Lover :)
