Migrator Assistant stuck on Setting up

Migrator Assistant stuck on Setting up

I'm trying to use Migrator Assistant and it pauses on a screen saying "Setting up", then it proceeds to exist and provide me with a login prompt. I'm want to use a Time Machine backup that I made of my old mac for this. The backup is on a network drive. The drive is mounted onto my new Mac and the time machine image drive is mounted as well. I can navigate to the backup drive and see my backup.

Is there something else that needs to be configured on my system? This is a work system so it is managed by our IT department. At first they had Migrator assistant disabled so I had to have them enable it again. Could there be another setting in my system that needs to be re-enabled for this to work?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello fratus,

We understand that you're trying to use Migration Assistant but the process isn't completing. When you say a login prompt, was it asking you to log into the Mac or was it asking for a password to access an encrypted or otherwise locked backup?

You may also be encountering a firmware password, which is outlined here: Set a firmware password on your Mac

Understood fratus,

So when using Migration Assistant, are you connected via Wi-Fi or are you using a wired connection? Also, is the backup as well as the new Mac running the same macOS version?

If there's still no progress with the migration, then what we would recommend is to Contact Apple Support so that they can look into this in greater detail with you.

Sounds like a plan fratus,

It is possible they have limitations in place when it comes to data transfer, so it'll be a good route just to confirm with them first. If you need any further support, then just reach out to Apple.

Hi, I’m hardwired to my network and both the backup and the new Mac are on the same version of macOS.

Thanks for your help. This is a work issued mac (2019 macBook Pro). Not sure we have support. I'll have to ask our IT.

Hi ShannonM1,

What I meant by "login prompt" was my Mac user login. My understanding is that Migration Assistant logs you out in order to execute. Upon completion, you need to log back into your mac.

I don't believe we have firmware password enabled.
