Airpods connecting by itself

I have the airpods pro and I’ve noticed recently that would connect to my phone without me having to put them into my ear. For example, let’s say I was watching a Youtube video out loud, randomly my sound would cut off and the airpods connected notification would pop up on my screen without me being near my airpods. Anyway for me to prevent this?

You are obviously close enough for the Bluetooth to make a connection.

(a) when not using your AirPods store them in the charging case. This should put them in standby mode.

(b) If the AirPods are out of the case they should only detect when the sensor thinks you put one of the pods in your ear. This might get confused if the AirPods need cleaning. How to clean your AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and EarPods - Apple Support
