Monterey 12.0.1. Second Monitor Issue

I just updated to Monterey 12.0.1. I have an iMac Retina 5k, 27-inch 2020 w/3.6Ghz 10 Core Intel Core i9; and have lost second display functionality. Both screens flicker on an off repeatedly when second monitor is connected to Thuderbolt port.

I got it to work!

I tried in Safe Mode and my external monitor worked fine. Restarted in normal mode - still same issue and I noticed my machine wouldn't SLEEP.

I found this article (https://michaelkummer.com/tech/mac-sleep-fix/) which suggested to reset the NVRAM and System Management Controller (SMC) by shutting down the Mac and turning it back on while holding the opt + command + R + P keys.

I did this with all external USB-C (except power) disconnected, logged in and plugged in my monitor.

Don't know how long it will last, but it's working now.

When I first encounter this issue I called Apple support and they sent me one of their adapters. It seemed to fix the issue for a time, until I plugged in a different monitor and then the problem came back. For the sale of clarity, my computer could always see the monitor, but the monitor reported “no signal” and the screen was blank. After Apple sent me the new adapter, the external monitor would show a picture briefly and then go blank and repeats the cycle. Strangely, today it just started working normally. No idea why as I didn’t change anything at all.

2 Weeks ago, I had the same issue, second monitor, a hardware color-calibrated NEC Spectra View 32 display, which was connected to an MBP M1max via a Belkin TB 3 dock, only showed a slightly shimmering shine, noting else, when I raised the MBP out of the sleep mode. In my case, it was the ICC-Profile. It was a Basiccolor display software generated LUT Profile, which caused this. After changing the profile to a Matrix-Profile, it worked again. The update to 12.1 seems to fix the LUT-Profile problem. Now the display works with both kinds of profiles, LUT and Matrix, as it did with the former MBP 2018 under Big Sur. Apple Support was rather surprised about that, but: it works for me.

OK .. So, this will be a stretch. But, because it worked like magic, I'm just gonna' throw it out there for ya'.

I rarely stream. Though, I do every once in a while.

Did a second screen work on Big Sur ?

Yes.

Once I upgraded to Monterey .. It stopped like what everyone's been claiming recently. So, I do have the same problem.

My 2017 iMac does not see the monitor at all.

Period.

Not after the upgrade to Monterey.

I did try almost everything that everyone suggested. Unplugging wires .. Repluggin'em .. Restarting, then doing the same process all over again. I tried many things that did not work. Until I really got frustrated and let the whole thing go.

I lost hope. But, then came that time when I thought about streaming again.

So, I opened Twitch Studio. Which I usually use the second monitor for so I'd see what my stream looked like for viewers.

The minute I started the application the second monitor just turned on automatically. No questions asked.

It was very surprising. I went to check system preferences displays settings. It's all there and I can control everything about it like before.

As much as I'm happy that it worked again; I'm still mad at the upgrade for not letting this work as smoothly as before. I shouldn't need an application ask for a display to have it work as normal as it's supposed to without any prompt.

Anyway,

It now works even without Twitch Studio on. It simply fixed it for me. Feels like a mistake if I try to unplug anything now. Not sure when I'll push myself to do it and see if it's gonna' mess it up again or not :|

..

My suggestion for you if you don't even care about streaming is:

Just download Twitch Studio .. install it .. run it .. see if it fixes your second monitor issue. Then, delete it if you want to.

https://www.twitch.tv/broadcast/studio

Might & might not work for you. Though, you got nothing to lose if you try.

I hope this helps .. I know how frustrating it can get :|

Good Luck !!

Apple .. I still love you .. But .. you know :/

Have a good day, everyone :)

It's a pain in the ***. You basically have to do a time machine backup, and then complete an internet restore by restarting and holding CMD + CTRL + Shift + R, and then reformat your hard drive to APFS, and then selecting the "Install operating system" option will install the original OS your computer came with. From there, you update to Big Sur, and then restore your time machine back up. This whole thing is such a disaster..

Hi all, I borrowed a VGA-USB-C adapter from a colleague of mine, which brand is not Apple (it is Conceptronic) and the external monitor works perfectly. So, the problem is with the official Apple VGA-USB-C adapter, which makes that the external monitor doesn't work. So, it is quite paradoxical. We spent a lot of money on Apple Adapters and they didn't work!! Please, Apple, this problem should be easy to fixed: Fix the issue and make that the Apple VGA-USB-C adapters work in our MacBooks!

Contrary to your experience, the Apple brand VGA-USB-C adapter is actually what got mine to work successfully. So Im not sure what's happening, but it seems to be something with the usb port/driver settings that are getting messed up during the OS update. I had to switch from a Belkin adapter to the Apple adapter and now my extended display works fine.

I just upgraded to 12.1 yesterday and immediately encountered this issue. I have a 34" Asus USB-C 21:9 ultra widescreen that has worked perfectly up till I updated the OS. Now if I go fullscreen on any app with that monitor the screen flickers on and off, it's completely unusable. Luckily if I don't fullscreen the app, but this needs to be fixed. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one encountering this.

Prior to this update the monitor worked fine. I work remotely for work using Microsoft RDP and it was great, RDP used all available screens at native resolution. I cannot utilize that feature any longer, I must either adapt to this bug or downgrade. I thought it was just Microsoft RDP that was causing it since if I left fullscreen it stopped. But then I went fullscreen on a youtube video with google chrome and the flickering returned. So this is definitely an Apple issue introduced in the OS 12 update.

Please fix this Apple. There are 8 pages of this issue since November.

Apple's senior tech advisor called me yesterday. He said the next thing to try is to do a clean install of Monterey 12.1. I backed up all my files to TimeMachine and did the clean install. Advice was not to restore files from TimeMachine backup during the install. I made a new user during the install and not to use Apple ID as was told and guess what... the same problem still exists.

All my drives connected to Dell Ultrasharp's USB hub were connected using the USB-C cable but no signal on the display. Apple promised to send a free USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter that 'usually solves the problem' as he said. I'm now waiting for the adapter and keep you guys updated if that helps. I am still waiting for the real solution to this annoying problem.

I got the USB C Digital AV adapter that Apple sent me. I connected it to USB C port and plugged in the USB C cable to it and to my Dell Ultrasharp. Same thing, no signal to the screen but USB devices connected to monitor's USB hub worked just fine. Also if you connect a HDMI cable to that adapter it works fine with display working fine. This is so annoying and no solution in sight.

So frustrating! Upgrade to 12.0.1 yielded NO external monitor! I've tried two different adaptors, two different monitors, 3 different HDMI cables, both HDMI ports on my Samsung monitor... all to no avail. Everything has been working FINE for months prior to applying the upgrade. APPLE, you need to fix this quickly... I lead a global sales performance team... I can't function with the poor camera, and tiny screen on my MacBook Pro.... I'm connected to a single 32" Samsung monitor. HELP!
