Ventura display corruption on 5120x1440 resolution

I use a Philips PHL 499P9 ( 5120x1440 ) connected to a Macbook pro 2018 13" I5 2,3ghz running Ventura 13.0.1 using USB-C (Apple Thunderbolt cable). Screen scrambles. It was previously working fine on both Monterey and Big Sur!

Is there any fix schedule?? Do I have to downgrade to Monterey?

After disabling Adaptive-Sync, I found I also had to adjust the “DisplayPort Ver.” down to 1.1 (under “System”, also within the monitor’s built-in menu) Unfortunately, that caps the resolution at 2560x1440.

Again, that’s specific to the Samsung Odyssey G9. For reference, my MacBook Pro is a 13” 2017 model running Ventura 13.3.1. Curiously, with no monitor menu changes it also worked fine from safe mode. It also works fine via HDMI.

Hi there Jan_P_Norway,

If the issue doesn't persist while your MacBook is booted in safe mode, then the culprit is most likely related to some login items. Follow these steps to further isolate the cause of the issue with your monitor:

If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode
If the issue doesn't continue while in safe mode, leave safe mode by restarting your Mac normally. Then test for the issue again. The issue might be resolved.

If the issue returns after leaving safe mode, startup items are probably at fault. Apps can install such items in numerous places, and they aren't always easy to find or recognize. For that reason, you should first make sure that you've installed any available updates for your Apple software and third-party apps.

If updating your software doesn't help, try any of these solutions:
1. Test your login items.
2. To learn whether software in your user account is causing the issue, set up a new user account, then log in to it and try to reproduce the issue in that account.
3. Unplug all accessories from your Mac, including printers, drives, USB hubs, and other nonessential devices. You could have an issue with one or more of those devices or their cables.
4. Reinstall macOS.
If you still need help, please contact Apple Support.

You'll find this information here: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Take care.

Hi Jan_P_Norway,

We understand this didn't happen with earlier versions of macOS, but we still recommend to check out the steps below to see if those help:

"Check your cable or adapter

Disconnect the cable from your external display from your Mac, then reconnect it. If the cable from your external display doesn't connect to the ports on your Mac, you can use a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter. If you're using a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter to connect a display, the adapter must be compliant with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt / USB 4."

Those steps, and more, can be found here: If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry when connected to your Mac - Apple Support

Also, you connect your Philips PHL 499P9 directly to your MacBook Pro with the USB-C cable, correct? We want to make sure we fully understand your setup.

Also, do you notice this happening when you are doing something specific (opening an app, turning on your MacBook Pro, so on) on your MacBook Pro? Your answers can help us determine possible next steps.

Take care.

Jan_P_Norway,

Let's try creating a new administrator user account in you System Settings to see if the issue persists there as well. This will determine whether the issue persists across the entire OS or not. You can learn how to do that here:

Create a new user or group.
Click the New Account pop-up menu (you may be asked to enter your password), then choose a type of account.

Here's a link to the full resource: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

If things continue you can reach out for additional support here: Get Support

Take care.

Hi Jan_P_Norway,

If you're able to reproduce the behavior in a test user, this would indicate a system-wide issue. Safe mode is useful when you're trying to resolve an issue that doesn't seem to be associated with using any particular app. How to use safe mode on your Mac has more information, along with steps to start up in safe mode.

"Intel processor

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window."

Let us know if you're able to reproduce the display issue in safe mode. We'll go from there.

Regards.

No, it does not work on my M1 mac mini: screen is black, flickers for half a second, then goes black again. have tried third-part software like SwitchResX to no avail. Reinstall OS did not work either. Fine on previous version of MacOS, completely bust on Ventura.

Essentially, this renders my expensive Samsung Odyssey Neo completely useless with MacOS. Thank god, I have a Windows PC in my office as well. My mac mini is essentially reduced to functioning as a letter press right now.

The lack of interest or response from Apple on an issue that effectively renders the Mac completely unusable is beyond appalling. This can not even be called "bad costumer service".
