Large file purge did not free up space on SSD: Very serious issue

Mac OS 12.0.1

Adobe After Effects was using over 600GB for cache files. I only had 280GB free of 2 TB on my SSD.

I confirmed that ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/After Effects folder was >600 GB!

In After Effects I used the purge cache function, which indeed removed the 600 GB of files from the cache directory. However, the space was NOT freed up on the SSD.

Trash was emptied and computer rebooted a number of times.

Now nearly 1/3 of my SSD space is lost. Monterey remove the files but did not free up the space.

What can I do?

Thanks to your question I could find the source of my Cache folder being extremely large. Indeed it was due to After Effects.

Go to ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/After Effects/ and you will see all your previous versions of After Effects (folders are named by version). Just delete all these folders excepts the current version in use. And presto... It freed up 700gb of space.
