Hello. I successfully edited a song in ITunes (an AAC audio file). I then dragged it to my desk top. I want to send this sound file vial email (Apple Mail), so dragged and dropped it to my draft email. However, when I played it to check, it only plays the unedited song, not the one I changed. What am I doing wrong here?

We'll assume a legitimate fair use context for this project. Track start and stop times in iTunes are internal properties that are not stored in the file's metadata. If you want to export an extract of a song you need to set the start and stop times, then convert the song to a new track. If the resulting file exceeds the attachment limit of your mail provider you may want to use iCloud Drive or a similar cloud service to transfer the file.

See Convert a song to a different file format with the Apple Music app or iTunes for Windows - Apple Support. When there are start/stop times on the track these are applied to the converted file, so it is only active portion of the track that is exported.

I don't have the Apple Music app, and apparently I'd have to update from OS Mojave to something later in order to install it. I found a simpler solution, if anyone's interested: in Itunes, select the tune to be converted; click on 'File' at the top, then click on 'convert' then click on AAC. It worked. Thanks for your info, though.
I must have had. AAC already selected because it worked - a lot easier than going through an OS upgrade, just so I can download the Apple Music App just so I can convert my music files to send via an email. Thanks.
Okay, I know you weren't recommending that, and I appreciate your taking the time to reply. But again, installing the Apple Music App would have required a system upgrade which I didn't want to get into at this point. Luckily I found an easier resolution.

I forgot: when you say "convert the song to a new track" can that be done with a simple 'save as' under a new title? Or is there something more involved? thanks again.
To be clear I was never recommending that you upgrade your operating system for this task, merely pointing you to the page where Apple describe how to use the convert format tool.

The instructions for iTunes for Windows are also the instructions for iTunes for Mojave and earlier. You need to choose your desired format ahead of using File > Convert, but that is the gist of it.
