Bluetooth connectivity is an absolute disaster on Airpod Max. Whatever the settings (detect head or not, iCloud or not, etc.), if you put them down on your neck or table they loose connection completely which often ends in doing a half- or complete reset. To avoid this, you have about 10s to put them in their casing. Plus it’s always a gamble when you take them out, as your device should be unlocked to be sure they communicate. Awful.

No other brands do this, you pick them up & they work. Fix it, Apple. Fix it, and find an On/Off switch..

W have no idea because we can't see your setup! Suggestions:

Make sure your iPhone (or other source device) is fully updated to the latest software available, Settings/General/Software Update

It sounds like you have probably found the Reset procedure, check you are following all thew steps exactly. How to reset your AirPods Max - Apple Support

If these checks don't resolve the problem the support document above has a link to the method of last resort. Contact Apple Support and get your AirPods checked by Apple Service..

i had the screeching sound in my first set of Airpod Max too. In tropical / warm regions, when you use them outside and inside (climatized room), condensation forms under the ear pads because of the sudden change of temperature/humidity (like glasses). Take the cushions off to check if you see condensation in the cups. Salty sweaty condense water, yummy. If you have the screeching noise, the Max's electronics already might be ruined by condensation. Apple Care+ replaced mine, now I'm careful when I put them down (cups up, cushion down) but man this can’t be a solution + doesn’t fix the connectivity issues. Bose.
