Joint Apple ID

My wife and I have always had a single Apple ID. We only use one calendar, one set of contacts, one e-mail account.

Apple expect us to have separate ID's and increasingly, having a single one causes problems such as only being able to have one ICE.

If we were to set up individual ID's then can we still share calendar, contacts, etc. What are the advantages/disadvantages of having separate ID's? What is impact on signing on to different devices?

You can share a calendar using iCloud.

To share contacts, you need to use a 3rd party app/application.

You can both use the same email account, but you can't use the same email for both Apple IDs.

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. If possible, also set up Family Sharing  between the IDs to keep access to your apps/purchases.

Thank you for that information, I shall look at it carefully. Will have to look at Contacts though because we only use one contacts list.

Having an initial look at some of the links you sent it refers to registering a device. Is it possible for a device to be registered to more than one ID and if so, how does this work. Apart from iPhones we share all of our devices (iPad, Mac, MacBook)?
