Macbook Pro 16 turned on by itself and kept running

Macbook Pro 16" 2019 turned on by itself in my backpack and kept running until the battery ran out.

Why did it turn on and not go to sleep if laptop cover was closed, why was the laptop running constantly on the login screen?

I have now schedule for automatic turn on (macOS Big Sur 11.6)

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 11.6

It is hard to say without some corroborating evidence.

You can always turn off the machine before you transport...

or

Control Command Q will lock the screen and require a psswd keep powered on and unlock

My guess would be a fairly significant jolt caused the power button to be depressed by the lid. Lids do lightly touch the keys; some more than others. Or maybe you have an electronic fault of some kind.

If this the first time, I'd take no action and just do the "watchful waiting" thing.

We have a touch lamp that comes on all by itself all the time. Something somewhere is producing a sympathetic frequency randomly that trips its start mechanism. Or else we have a ghost.
