Text message regarding agreeing to Apple Media Services

My mother-in-law received a text message asking her to agree to iCloud and Apple Media Services terms and conditions and asked us if she needed to respond. She has no subscriptions and only uses the phone for voice calls and texts, and takes a few photos and we send her photos through a shared album. Two questions:

  1. Does Apple really send users this kind of request via text message? We thought it sounded suspicious so told her not to agree or disagree. Is it possible it was really a notification and she just thought it looked like a text?
  2. If it is a legitimate request for which Apple requires response and she deleted the message how can she agree to the terms and conditions now? Her phone is set up to "Download and Install" updates in case that matters.

Thanks in advance.

No. Please do not respond to any text or email messages

  1. Don't share sensitive information pertaining to your device and payment methods
  2. Beware of Phishing

Thanks for both replies. It does seem like this was either a phishing attempt if it was a text message or a legitimate notification and she doesn't know the difference.

The weird thing is that my wife and I just did the update to iOS 14.8.1 and I got a notification regarding the iCloud and Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions agreement. As Michael stated, I received a notification as I attempted to install the update in General Settings. I agreed and the installation proceeded. However, my wife did the same thing, but did not receive the notification. Our phones are both set to "Download Only", so we install updates manually. No paid subscriptions for either of us. Seems inconsistent.

BTW, I was surprised to see the this in the iCloud Terms and Conditions (under X. GENERAL, A. Notices):

"Apple may provide you with notices regarding the Service, including changes to

this Agreement, by email to your iCloud email address (and/or other alternate

email address associated with your Account if provided), iMessage or SMS, by

regular mail, or by postings on our website and/or the Service."

Still I wouldn't trust any links in a "notice" via text message.

Thanks again!

When Apple modifies a service’s terms of agreements, the new terms will appear as a push notification sent at the time you go to use that service. So for example, changes to the App Store terms would only appear, as a push notification sent when you go to purchase or update an App, or when updating iOS, the terms and services agreement appears before you can install the update.

Push notifications are a secure and app or service specific method to present users with such forms they may need to interact with to proceed. But they only popup when you try to open or use the app or service in question.
