How do I get passed the LOCK screen ? It is Black with a PADLOCK and I think I accidentally locked it in error... hit a wrong command OOPS! The MacBook Pro was a gift from my fiance in 2016. He no longer has the receipt (he bought online from 3d party vendor) We tried the several passwords he may have used and the one I use but no luck... Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.2

Hi Patrice2344,

It sounds like a firmware password might be set on your Mac by the previous owner when they still had it. A firmware password blocks you from accessing Startup Manager (hold down Option at startup) and macOS Recovery (Command-R at startup) unless you know the password.

To exit the firmware password prompt, press and hold the power button (Touch ID) until your Mac powers off. Then, start up normally.

You should contact the previous owner and ask them to disclose the firmware password. If they refuse, ask Apple to remove the password at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider and provide your proof of purchase.
