Unable to check for update

I have an iPhone 12 and a series 4 apple watch. When I try to pair the watch I am getting the error "Unable to check for update. Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet". I have searched for a solution to this problem and have followed *every single one* of the steps suggested and not a single one of them work. Someone please help.
