I do not have enough disk space to perform OS upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade my MacBook Air to latest OS and telling me I do not have enough disk space. Other than a few excel files (that is not the problem) what can I delete? to perform OS Upgrade with jeopardizing going back to my previous OS if an issue?
