iOS calendar app shows canceled Exchange meetings

The only way I have figured out how to remove canceled meetings from my calendar app which is synced with my Exchange work account is to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to the calendar. How come canceled meetings still show up and is there a better/easier way to remove them?
