Apple Watch SE: Cannot Update Software

My Watch app is saying that a software update is available, but when I try to update I get a message that I "first need to update the software on your iPhone." My phone is up to date (iOS 14.8.1). I've powered off both the phone and watch, but still get the message and can't update the Watch software. Help!

WatchOS will not update My Apple Watch 6 is on WatchOS 7.3.3, and I cannot update to a new version. Several times, it prompted me to do an evening update, and I set it up to do so, but it failed to update. Now, when I go to the Watch app on my phone and go to the General -> Software Update page, it says: “To update the software on your Apple Watch, you first need to update the software on your iPhone.” the problem is that my iPhone is on iOS 14.8 and it claims to be up to date. when I try to update from the Watch, it says: ”Checking for update…” ”Unable to Check for Update An error occurred while checking for a software update” I have already tried rebooting both devices, and I even unpaired and re-paired my watch with my phone. This had no effect, and I was still unable to update the watch.

Why does my Apple Watch not update? I am very upset still. I have a screen in my Watch app that says, “To update the software on your Apple Watch, you need to update the software on your iPhone.” My iPhone states it’s up to date, 15.7.1 for iOS on my iPhone 6s. Essentially since my phone is old (can’t run iOS 16) my watch is now unable to be updated. Please help me, I want an update without buying a new phone. I don’t want a new phone at all.

If you want to update your watch to watchOS 8.X, you will need iOS 15.X on your iPhone.

iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 are compatible with these devices - Apple Support
