Switching back and forth between user profiles on MacBook Pro M1 (Monterrey) my AirPods disconnect

I've got two profiles set up on my M1 machine. One profile for work, the other for personal use. Throughout the day I tend to switch between them regularly as I like to keep things separate. Now every time when I have my AirPods connected and switch over to the other user, the AirPods stay connected, but each time when I switch back to the user they automatically disconnect. Doesn't matter if I switch back within 20 seconds, or whether I have been using the other profile for 30 minutes or longer. I then have to put the AirPods back in the case, wait a moment. Then try and connect them again which doesn't always work the first time around to then finally be able to use them again. It's not the worst, but it does bother me. I'm also considering buying the AirPods Max, but if it were to have the same issue I would probably forego that option.

Is this expected behaviour or is there anything I can do about this?

Hi peterveck,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you have a question about using your AirPods on your Mac when switching profiles. We're happy to provide some information to assist.

"In some situations with macOS Big Sur or later, you'll see a notification about your AirPods on the screen of your Mac. Click Connect to confirm that you want your AirPods to switch to your Mac or stay with your Mac."

You can find this information and more details to help check all settings are correct here: Switch your AirPods to another device

Specifically, the section that states:

On your Mac

  1. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth.
  2. Click the Options button next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
  3. From the Connect to This Mac menu, choose When Last Connected to This Mac.
  4. To turn this feature on again, choose Automatically.

It also mentions "Sound should not switch from one device to another automatically if you're in a conversation, like a phone call, a FaceTime call, or a video conference."

If you've checked your settings and all is correct and the issue continues, reach out to Apple Support directly to further assist.
